Fashion is sign language.
(I struggled to reach this conclusion.)

At first, this week, I tried too hard, striving for an adventure that was real deep, and was beginning to feel overwhelmed by all things fashion. Trying to be, wear, create, look, and appear in fashion– was supposed to lend me clues as to- what’s the meaning? what’s the essence? what’s the point of this? Right?
It started in the mornings in front of my closet thinking, I don’t have time for this. I don’t have time to sort through old clothes or makeup my face. I don’t even have time to part my hair on the other side! I’m running late…
By the end of the week, sorting through the photos I had taken of unadventurous appearances made in unexciting outfits, I was ready to confirm my fashionssignment attempt a failure. A flop, like the droopy wetsuit I wore this week at the beach for one of my infrequent attempts at surfing. My surfing attempts are always a lot of fun. I don’t hang ten, so to speak, but I’m starting to…hang. So- wait, I’m getting to something- because what comes first anyway? Wearing the wetsuit and going surfing or surfing and having to wear a wetsuit?
Another example, suggestive of an eventual overhaul of the whole staring at the closet in the morning with indecision and feeling that fashion makes for pressure to make a choice: the T-shirt I chose to wear on Tuesday (photographed above.) I chose to wear it because I rarely wear things with slogans, words or brand names branded. Plus, Stephanie gave it to me and we both agreed that we weren’t sure what it entirely meant. It wasn’t what I had in mind at the outset for the assignment, of being adventurously fashionable, so I felt half-hearted in my attempt that day. Now, interestingly, to me the T-shirt words slogan make a little bit of sense based on how I have come to twist the logic of this whole endeavor. I got a lot of compliments on it. I think they were compliments inspired by confusion, but that was satisfying because that’s how I first felt about it too. Somehow I projected a conversation here and there by what I was wearing. Somehow I was noticed for what I was wearing. Somehow that was more significant than wearing something for the noticing… See what I’m getting at?

Another item I considered a part of the fashionssignment experience is a string of mala beads that were a special gift to me. I wear them very often and hesitated about including them for the assignment. While not an outrageous, exotic or extremely trendy as a statement- the necklace is an important fashion for me because it’s personal, precious and actually functional. (Mala beads are used for meditation.)

2014-09-14 10.51.45Finally, I took a picture of a pair of shorts that I bought this week at the $2 thrill store. It’s a clothing store that- you guessed it- sells everything for $2. Lately I have had a hard time “dressing up” more which was what I imagined this assignment might encourage me to do a little more, but there really never seemed a good reason to do so. What does that mean anyway…what is a good reason to worry about what you’re wearing? Aside from required uniforms and dress codes, what compels us- as adults- what to wear where, and why we wear what?
I have a hard time with jean shorts because they’re getting shorter and I’m getting older. And they change but they’re always still just denim cut-offs… It troubles me that you buy them brand new but they’re worn out with holes and they’re still just as expensive!  And if- as I suspect we all tend to agree- fashion is a function of your age and is measurable by affordability as much as creativity- I wonder when I’ll just give up altogether, as I fear it will no longer be appropriate to wear what I wore when I was younger and I will no longer be able to justify buying the latest, that to me seems like the same old thing but a little less. I bought them for $2 because they fit and practicality wins again. Fashion must take a back seat to function. For thirty hours a week, I work with dark brown coffee and bright white bleach. For thirty hours a week, I prefer to wear the $2 version over the $200 version.

Fashion is a sign of the life that you live. When you have time to try and experiment with the clothes and accessories you own or seek to buy that’s great. When you do not take the time to make fashion a conscious choice, that’s fine. You still have it; your fashion never fades.
I believe that fashion is an expression of a style you already have. It’s a personal language. Words express thoughts from the inside out. Fashion expresses style from the inside out. I truly believe that style is as unique to an individual as their thoughts, beliefs and feelings.  I don’t believe you can judge someone based on their fashion. It’s like taking someone seriously more for their words than their actions. It’s an illusion.

Fashion is a lagging indicator of style. Fretting about being fashionable is a waste of time. Fulfillment is in doing what you need to do and getting it done, as well as doing what you want to do and enjoying it fully. Deciding what you need to wear for the occasion is an easy decision when the occasions are fulfilling. When I’m in wetsuit I speak the dialect of waves and sand, cocktails and sunsets. When I choose to the same piece of jewelry everyday it’s not for anyone else to get tired of looking at and seeing me in, it’s because I can look at it tirelessly and see myself in it. The cheap long jean shorts work so I’m not worried about ruining something worth ruining at work. And it translates to working with one less thing to worry about, so I work a little harder.

in pursuit of the white rabbit

i took a few days to find my first sign, or it took a few days for my first sign to find me.  on thursday, i visited a cafe that i’m not able to frequent on a regular basis.  it was an unplanned visit, i happened to be driving by and took an unanticipated turn into the parking lot.  after ordering a red tea latte, i scanned the room for a table to sit and wait and found an empty table containing the following…lion sign 1

a sun and a lion.  when i saw the two objects i smiled.  this was clearly my sign!  literally my sign! leo the lion ruled by the sun.  here we are in august, my favorite month of the year, an important birthday quickly approaching and i stumble upon a sun and a lion.

lion sign 2

on saturday i had another lion encounter, two in fact.  the first lion was my treasure at the end of a retail hunt.  a lion bracelet!  there was only one like it that i could see and it was on a super clearance for $2!  if that isn’t a good sign then i don’t know what is!

lion sign 3

lion reinforcement continued moments after my bracelet find at a natural foods store.  at precisely 3:21 in the afternoon the song playing over the loud speaker:  “King and Lionheart” by Of Monsters and Men.

and finally today, written on the envelope of my birthday card:

lion sign 4

persistant sign:  lion.

conclusion: i’m interpreting these lions as signs for a wonderful birthday celebration and the realization of personal strength and courage!

follow the white rabbit assignment.

white rabbit

this weeks assignment draws inspiration from the matrix.  if you haven’t watched the movie, we highly encourage you to do so, but here is a brief synopsis of the movie reference…  the main character, neo, receives a bizarre message on his computer telling him to “follow the white rabbit”.  at the moment the message seems meaningless but moments later he hears a knock at his door and opens it to find a woman with a white rabbit tattooed on her shoulder.  he follows her, as per the message, and the story continues from there…  would he have followed this young woman had he not received the instructions prior to the knock at the door? maybe yes maybe no, but there is little doubt that neo had a heightened sensitivity towards the concept of a white rabbit after receiving the message, otherwise he may not have noticed her tattoo at all…

  • this week’s assignment is an exercise in observation, adventure and coincidence. keep your eyes and ears open.  inevitably something will capture your attention and compel you to begin.  perhaps your adventure also begins with a white rabbit.  perhaps it begins with a stranger wearing lime green sneakers, a chocolate ice cream cone, or a lady you meet on the bus named June.   you’ll know when to start.
  • allow yourself to be directed by the universe or by sheer coincidence.  where do you find the next sign?  do you follow the stranger with the lime green sneakers into the library?  what do you find there?  is your chocolate ice cream cone ripped out of your hands by a passing sea gull?  does June give you the business card of her friend who reupholsters used furniture?
  • what happens next?  allow yourself to be led.  follow the clues that emerge along your journey.  keep going.
  • document what you find.  take photographs, sketch, write, discover!
  • your journey may last one day or a few.  there is no specific time frame to follow.
  • share your discoveries with us at

week the first revisited.

july first marked the birthday of adventureclub!  not adventureclubinteractive (that birthday comes again in a few months), but adventureclub.  before it was “interactive” in the digital, online sense, adventureclub was purely interactive in the person to person organic sense.  we discussed ideas over a table and cup of coffee instead of the telephone and exchanged touchable, tangible photographs instead of jpegs.  we passed paper instead of emailing documents and we chased those papers down the street when a surly gust of wind blew them out of our hands.  adventureclubinteractive began as adventureclub, over a kitchen table, with the birth of our original assignment…

this week, we revisit our original assignment!  (yes! the very first one!)

common theme

create a series of 7-10 photographs that share one common element or theme.

did you get my message?

“it began as most origin stories begin, with a miscommunication…”

voicemail.  yet another means to convey important information and communication.  didn’t you listen to my message?

what is your voice mail style?  do you leave a message at all?  are your messages curt with precise instructions to “call me back as soon as you get this” with no further details?  do you prefer to make full use of the “tape” and leave a detailed experience for the listening pleasure of the recipient?  let’s go with the last example.

this week is all about missing calls and leaving messages…not only messages, but elaborate, verbose, communicative, and loquacious narratives that tell a story!

this assignment requires a partner and a phone with a working voicemail.   decide who will go first.

step 1:  partner A calls partner B and leaves a voicemail with the beginning of a story!
partner B can listen to the message one time.  partner B then writes down a transcription of the message.

step 2:  partner B calls partner A and leaves a voicemail with the continuation of the story!
partner A can listen to the message one time.  partner A then writes down a transcription of the message.

repeat each day.

if your partner thwarts your voicemail leaving attempt – if your partner chooses to pick up the phone, enjoy the conversation and see where it takes you!  make no mention of your message attempt.  simply try again later.  be a voicemail ninja.

at the end of the week, come together with your partner and compile your transcriptions into the complete story!

let us commence!

about this time every year as spring makes it’s inevitable turn into summer, the season of graduation emerges yet again.  out with old, in with the new.  close a door, open a window and open yourself to the limitless possibilities of…your future!!!

graduations are important, or so it seems. they bear a weight and significance to most, perhaps to mothers most of all, but nevertheless, a graduation from and on to…is a notable transition and date to remember.

write your own commencement speech.  address it to your past self with wisdom you know now in the present.  or, address your speech to your present self with an eye on the future.  maybe even try to combine a little of each.
